Saint Lucy’s day
We
commemorate Saint Lucy on 13th December.
Lucia
escorted a sick mother to Catania to the tomb of St. Agot to seek her recovery.
She prayed and her mother was healed and St. Agot, who appeared in her dream,
offered her baptism. Lucia accepted the offerings and professed to be the wife
of Jesus. She left her bridegroom so he reported it. The prince commanded that
they should be poured out with oil and pitch, and burned with fire. But the
fire did not catch Lucia. Eventually her captives cut her throat, but she did
not die until she had finished her prayer.
The most widely known custom of Lucy’s day tradition is the
making of Lucy’s chair. It
had to be made of 9 kinds of wood. The spruce chair was made slowly, only one
operation could be done on it every day. The maker of the chair took the chair
with him to the midnight Mass on December 24 and sat on the chair to see who
the members of the congregation were witches. Once the maker of the chair
recognized the witches, he had to run quickly and sprinkle poppy seeds behind
him to ensure that his exposed pursuer did not follow in his footsteps. The
home already provided security, but the Luca chair had to be burned anyway.
