Halloween
Halloween is celebrated on 31st
October each year. In 2021 Halloween will be on next Sunday.
The tradition of Halloween comes from the ancient
Celtic festival of Samhain. It started from Ireland, Scotland and England. Samhain
was the Celtic new year and they celebrated it on 1st November because that was
the beginning of winter. They
thought the spirits return to the Earth one day. People lit big
fire, wore clothes made of animal skin and hoped to be safe from the ghosts and
the winter. By now Halloween has become the United
States’ second-biggest festival after Christmas.
The main symbol of Halloween is the pumpkin. The Celts
carved faces into vegetables like turnips, potatoes, squash and pumpkin to
scare the ghosts and other spirits and make them go away.
Children wear costumes and they go to people’s houses.
They sometimes dress up as ghosts, witches, goblins, and other scary things for
Halloween. They knock on people’s doors and ask for sweets, saying trick or treat !
Halloween is also celebrated in other
countries, but not as much as in the United States.
I love
Halloween too. I will care a pumpkin lamp called Jack-o-Lantern with my brother
again this year.
