Halloween

Halloween is an ancient Celtic holiday. Halloween comes from the term „All Hallows Eve”. It means the night before All Saints. We celebrate Haloween on 31st October. The Celts believed that the spirits of the dead will return and move into living people. That’s why they dressed in scary costumes to scare away ghosts.

It has become a popular holiday in America since the 1900s. In the USA kids wear in Halloween costumes, knock on doors and say Trick or treat! They usually get chocolate and adults have fun. Beside this they usually celebrate with friends at a costume party. The most important Halloween symbol is the pumpkin lantern. A candle is placed inside the pumpkin lamp.

In Hungary, the celebration of Halloween began in the early 2000s. It’s popular among kids and mainly among students. They make some pumpkin lanterns. They decorate the houses with scary decorations. They dress in costume.

The most popular costumes are: witches, ghosts, skeletons and zombies.

The day after Halloween is All Saint’s Day. This is the day of saved souls.
