Thanksgiving - Stummer Lóránt (7.b) írása
Each year people in the United States celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. It is simply referred to by many as ‘turkey day’.
It is one of the biggest holidays in the United States, and in 2021 it is on 25th November.
Most families follow traditions begun on the first Thanksgiving, but many have their own traditions that they follow each year. In the morning of Thanksgiving, families say a prayer. According to the traditions, after the autumn harvest, they say thanks to God for the harvest.
Spanish explorers and settlers held a Thanksgiving service in the late 1500s in present-day Florida and New Mexico. Thanksgiving also took place as early as 1607 in Virginia, where it was held in 1610 in the first permanent settlement in Jamestown. At first, George Washington proclaimed National Thanksgiving in 1789. A large parade is held in New York every year since 1924.
Thanksgiving would be no complete without the traditional meal. The turkey is a national bird of North America.
Tradional meal consists of: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes , as well as sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts.
Nearly 45 million turkeys are roasted on this day in the United States each year but the U.S. president saves two turkeys from slaughter.
They also play plenty of American football matches on this day.
This holiday also marks the start of the Christmas
season in the USA.
I like this holiday but we don't celebrate it in Hungary.
